Introduction
This is an interesting game recreating the nightmare Napoleon found himself in 1812. The player commands a depleted Grande Armée attempting to cross the Berezina River as it disintegrates. It’s pretty depressing for the player but gives a good insight and feel into what happened over those four fateful days.

Play of the Game
I found it a very tough game to play with the outdated solitaire rules not helping. Also the  Russians would have a huge advantage in a two-player game. I added some new solitaire rules as I played. These rules make the Russian AI more detailed and should give for a smoother game.

Got side-tracked from playing Campaign’s of Marlborough and got to thinking how on earth did Marlborough manage to win the Battle of Blenheim?

The French defensive position was almost perfect. Terrain wise,  the only flaw was that a possible retreat of the French right wing would be blocked by the Danube River. The Battle Plan was sound, 3 fortified villages would enfilade Allied brigades assaulting both the Ditches & Thickets Area and the Sloped Fields Area with heavy artillery fire. 

Campaigns of Marlborough features what I think is one of the best campaign systems around, though the Move and Intercept rules are a nightmare for solo rule design. I've never managed to create workable AI for the French but again, using Field Commander Napoleon’s Enemy Orders rules as the basis, I designed and play tested some solo rules and they worked great!

Don’t really know why I bought Field Commander Napoleon from dvg.com, temptation I guess. I’m cautious about buying new boardgames because I like to replay  games I already own. I played all 11 Campaigns individually, winning all but 1796, 1805 and 1806.
