FRONTLINE D-DAY

I decided to buy Frontline D-Day from dvg.com because I needed a solitaire game I could take with me on camping trips and presumed a card-based system would be ideal. On setting the game up and playing a couple of solitaire scenarios, I was disappointed to find that the set-up was cumbersome and took up a lot of space so wasn’t a game to be played outdoors. I streamlined the system, but though this was effective, it took away a lot of the visual beauty of the game.  Finally I gave up and decided to play a standard campaign, though I am keeping my modifications to the Morale counters. I chose U.K. Infantry for the campaign.

My squad survived the German counterattack in #05 21st Panzers Head to the Beach though we lost Private Brown and a Bren Carrier for 4 Campaign Points. Got through #11 Approaching Caen with Private Thomas and a Bren Carrier lost for 4 Campaign Points. Next was a failed attempt to enter Caen in #12 Operation Charnwood with high losses consisting of Lance Green, Private Scott, Private Porter, Private Wilson, Private Smith and a Bren Carrier with Private Baker wounded and removed from the squad for 5 negative Campaign Points! Captured Hill 112 in #13 Caen only losing a QF 6-Pounder which was beyond repair for 7 Campaign Points. Managed to close the breach in #17 Falaise Pocket - Escape with the loss of just a single, you guessed it, Bren Carrier for 6  Campaign Points. I managed to knock out an enemy tank with a PIAT for the first time in 12 games during this fire-fight:

Rocket Launcher Section consisting of Corporal Jackson and Private Davies ordered to support a Churchill tank. Section jumps-off from scattered trees (3); Section moves (Move Out! and Stay Low!) to undergrowth (4); Section moves (Flanking Position) to stream (5); Corporal Jackson fires PIAT (Attack!) at Panzer IV in open ground (7); Armoured Vehicle destroyed!

Campaign outcome was 16 Campaign Points for a Historical Victory Level. I took time getting accustomed to the presentation and game mechanics of this game but at one point I began to hear the click of every magazine re-load, feel the blast of each point-blank range tank shell explosion and see the enemy in the tree-line opposite and realized what this game is all about, awesome!
