
Presented here is a resolution of a game of Hill of Doves in narrative form. This game was my first with the new Legion Wargames components. Text in bold italics are comments by George at the time of each incident.
WEEK 1 (Jan 3-9, 1881)
3/1: Dawn on the veldt. A bugle calls at Fort Amiel. George awakes in the HQ building and calls to his aide. "Tea and biscuits please and gather the officers."

“Tally-ho, what?" Colley, at the head of the NFF, marches out of Ft. Amiel towards Laing's Nek.

4/1: "Ah, Mount Prospect in sight." NFF arrive at the British camp.

5/1: "We need more supplies." HQ 58, 2 x 58, D/58 and 60 (‘HQ 58 Column’ for short) set off back to Ft. Amiel to pick up the Ox Wagon Convoy (‘Convoy’ for short) being assembled there.
6/1: "Right, let's show them we're here." A night assault column consisting of HQ 3/60, 2 x 3/60, S/60 and N5 sent to capture O'Neill's farm disperses. "Hmm!"
7/1: HQ 58 Column arrives at Fort Amiel

8/1: "I'll lead tonight's night assault!" Colley, 2 x 58, NMP and 10/7 capture an abandoned O'Neill's farm.

In the meantime, "Good news from Durban." HMS Boadicea steams into the port.

WEEK 2 (Jan 10-16, 1881)

10/1: HQ 58 column escorting a Convoy set off in deep mud back to Mt. Prospect.
12/1: HQ 58 column arrives at Mt. Prospect.

13/1: "Our first daylight assaults." 8 am to 11 am - HQ 3/60, 2 x 3/60, S/60 and 60 overrun 50 Boers behind sangers on the Ridge. 10 am to 1 pm - HQ 58, 2 x 58 and D/58 similarly overrun 50 Boers behind sangers on Nkwelo plateau.
14/1: "Keep the supplies rolling." HQ 58 column sets off for Fort Amiel to pick up another convoy. Fever strikes the Naval column in Durban! Boad NB and Boad R effected.
15/1: HQ 58 column arrives at Fort Amiel.
15/1: HQ 58 column arrives at Fort Amiel.

In the meantime; slowed by delays, bad roads and the fever, the Naval column set off on the long trek to Newcastle.

17/1: HQ 58 column, escorting a convoy, set off for Mt. Prospect.

Wakkerstroom garrison surrenders! "The Boer scoundrels!"
18/1: HQ 58 column arrives at Ft. Amiel.
19/1: "Last night assault, I can't risk more." A night assault column consisting of HQ 58, 3 x 58 and 60 sent to capture Majuba slopes disperses. "Nooo!" British abandon Nkwelo plateau later in the day.

26/1: "Strong opposition on Majuba slopes expected!" An assault by HQ 3/60, 3 x 3/60, S/60 and 60 on Smit and 200 Boers behind sangers on the slopes fails and the column retreats back to the British camp.

WEEK 5 (Jan 31-Feb 6, 1881)
31/1: "Heavy rain, that means Double Drifts flooded!" HQ 3/60 column and convoy set off for Mt. Prospect at a crawl in deep mud.
1/2: "Still heavy rain. "Mud everywhere...argh!"
2/2: Rain stops, HQ 3/60 column finds Double Drifts shallow and reaches British camp in the afternoon. "Ah, I spot a herd with the convoy for the mountain guns." British abandon Nkwelo plateau.
4/2: "The deluge continues unabated." HQ 58 column stranded in a quagmire.
1/2: "Still heavy rain. "Mud everywhere...argh!"
2/2: Rain stops, HQ 3/60 column finds Double Drifts shallow and reaches British camp in the afternoon. "Ah, I spot a herd with the convoy for the mountain guns." British abandon Nkwelo plateau.
4/2: "The deluge continues unabated." HQ 58 column stranded in a quagmire.

5/2: "Mud, mud and more mud!"

6/2: "Some good news." Sunshine. Two herds available at Ft. Amiel. A battered Naval column arrives at Ft. Amiel after over a month of arduous marching. The Indian column sets off to Newcastle.

Negotiations swing towards the Triumvirate.

No British assault at Laing's Nek for two weeks now.

WEEK 6 (Feb 7-13, 1881)

7/2: "Darn, the scoundrels are firing upon the camp! Everyone to the camp perimeter!" 50 Boers raid British camp under cover of a rainstorm. They flee into the mist when confronted by the firepower of 3 x 3/60, 3 x 58 and 60 commanded by Colley. "Talk about ammunition wastage.”
A muddy HQ 58 column arrives at Ft. Amiel greeted by the Naval brigade.
8/2: HQ 58, 2 x 58, Boad NB, D/58, S/60, Boad gatling's and a convoy set off in sunshine for Mt. Prospect. Boad R remain at Ft. Amiel to hopefully acquire a herd.
9/2: HQ 58 column arrives at the British camp.

10/2: "Okay, let's try to burn their Coldstream laager." HQ 3/60, 3 x 3/60 and Boad G assault 150 Boers on Majuba slopes. HQ 58, 2 x 58 and NMP assault 50 Boers behind sangers on Nkwelo plateau. Boers overrun in both positions.
11/2: "Next the majestic mountain." HQ 3/60, 3 x 3/60 and 60, in deep mud, overrun 100 Boers on Majuba Mt.

"Bad news.” Rustenburg garrison has been duped and surrenders.

"Mission accomplished, the laager burns!" 60 destroys the Coldstream laager.
"Too hot to handle!" British abandon Majuba Mt.
12/2: Rain is lashing down as HQ 58, 3 x 58, D/58 and Boad G leave for Ft. Amiel.
13/2: "Here nice mule." Boad R get their herd at Ft. Amiel and thus can travel to Mt. Prospect.

15/2: HQ 58 column, now also accompanied by Boad R and a convoy, leave for Mt. Prospect.

HQ 58, 2 x 58 and 60 capture Majuba Mt. from 50 Boers. HQ 3/60, 2 x 3/60 and Boad NB defeat the Crack veldkornetskap and 50 other Boers at Laing's farm. British later abandon Majuba Mt.
20/2: Birds chirping. "It's been an eternity since it was sunny and dry." Colley column arrives at Ft. Amiel. "Two herds at Ft. Amiel, great!" Indian column marches into Ft. Amiel. "Good to see you general Wood...gin?"

WEEK 8 (Feb 21-27, 1881)
21/2: "Now we're talking!” Colley, accompanied by Wood, heads off towards Mt. Prospect at the head of a column consisting of 3 regiments (2/60, 92 and 15H), 2 x 58, Dido NB and Boad G.

22/2: Colley column marches into British camp with the army band blaring.

23/2: "Now we capture the Nek but first Majuba." HQ 92, 3 x 92 and Dido NB overrun 100 Boers behind sangers on Majuba Mt.
24/2: Wood, 5 x 58, Boad NB, 4 x 15H, D/58, S/60, N/5 and Boad G assault 450 Boers, including their Crack, entrenched on the Nek.
...which is then taken with cold steel. “Hurrah!" Sadly, Wood is killed and many casualties amongst British horses. "This does not bode well."

HQ 3/60, 3 x 3/60 and Dido NB capture Brownlow's kop from a Boer patrol.
N5 destroys Smit laager from the Nek.
25/2: “Floods!” HQ 58 with reduced 5 x 58, dismounted D/58, S/60 and 4 x 15H, accompanied by Dido NB and Boad G set off for Fort Amiel to recover. HQ 58 column gets stuck at fords. "..and it's already Friday!"
26/2: "Sunny...phew!"
27/2: HQ 58 column arrives at F. Amiel up to their knees in deep mud. "Just in time!" 4 companies soon back up to full strength and 4 troops remounted. 2 herds with the convoy.

2/3: "Still deep mud!" HQ 58 column stuck at Double Drifts.
3/3: The sun comes out. "Cocktails in the garden anyone?" HQ 58 column trundles into the British camp. Brownlow's Kop is abandoned.
4/3: HQ 3/60, 5 x 3/60, Boad NB, Dido NB, Boad G, 2 x 15H, S/60, NMP and 60 M overrun just 300 Boers entrenched on Table Mountain. Smit and Crack were present. "Well done HQ 3/60!"
1/3: HQ 58 column reaches Schuinshoogte.
2/3: "Still deep mud!" HQ 58 column stuck at Double Drifts.
3/3: The sun comes out. "Cocktails in the garden anyone?" HQ 58 column trundles into the British camp. Brownlow's Kop is abandoned.
4/3: HQ 3/60, 5 x 3/60, Boad NB, Dido NB, Boad G, 2 x 15H, S/60, NMP and 60 M overrun just 300 Boers entrenched on Table Mountain. Smit and Crack were present. "Well done HQ 3/60!"
